    HDD Not Powering

I've finally gotten to the point of hooking my kit up to my car and I'm having problems with powering up hard disks.

    My setup is:
    Via mini-ITX m10000
    128mb RAM
    PW70A DC-DC psu

Originally I was using a Western Digital 3.5" 7200rpm 80gig HDD (these things are damn quiet). but it acts like it's not getting enough power (just makes a clicking noise). The disk is fine as it works on other PCs.

I tried an old clunky 3.2gig 3.5" 5400rpm Maxtor drive and it worked fine. I also tried a 1.3gig 2.5" IBM notebook drive which also worked. However my 'older' 3.5" 7200rpm 40gig Seagates won't work either.

Will the PW70A not power 7200rpm drives? (the documentation says it will)

Has anyone else had similar issues with hdd's not working? Is there a 'recommended' drive to use? I'm probably going to have to buy another hdd but I'd like to know that what I'm getting will work.

    Thanks

Just went and bought an Hitachi 30gig 2.5"(Model IC25N030ATCS04) 4200rpm drive with the same power rating as my 1.4gig(4.7w peak) that worked.

    Fingas crossed...

I thought the +12V of the PW70A is unregulated, so you need an ITPS to stabilize it before it gets to the PW70A, this will also delay the power on to survive the crank if I'm not mistaken.

I may be wrong but the +12V will vary with the car voltage, if so it will give you problems.

Exactly you were probably giving the HDD more than 12V and some HDD will be OK, some won't.

I did have an ITPS on the input at the time so it should have been a clean 12volts.

It looks like it was just something with the Western Digital drive as I've got everything in and running well now with the Hitachi and it works great.

    Problem solved.

yeah, but the hitachi 2.5" doesn't use the +12v supply, it runs from the +5v supply.

If you have an ITPS then things should have been ok as long as your engine was running. The ITPS has quite a high drop out as all regs do 1.3V I think, so it may not have been producing +12v if the engine was not turning.

I fought and fought with my m-10000 and this exact issue. I was using the little casetronic with the internal 12V DC-DC PSU. I wound up with an under voltage condition. Seemed the drive would try to start, figure it was failing, then repeat. It was/is a WD JB2500. The little guy actually had 11.2V on the 12V lead at the drive. After cleaning up a couple of "questionable" solder connections on the power supply, it worked like a charm.
