    riddle me this - 5V or 12V DC to 100V AC inverter

    so i bought this character LCD screen that has EL backlighting ... problem is i need to power it!!! :'( i'm looking for a cheap/decent inverter for this. maybe i can buy one of those EL products from computer modding sites and use that inverter... but its only 90V AC .. will the EL backlight be as bright if i use that? or will it not work at all?

    You have to check the specs for your display's EL backlighting. Check the manufacturer (Matrix Orbital, Densitron, Varitronix, etc) and look for the model's datasheet... When I bought mine from Digikey, it listed the part number for the compatible inverter, which I purchased along. It is very small (about the size of a pair of dices) transformer-like thing. I think inverters used on computer modding are for fluorescent tubes, and they would probably fry your lcd's backlighting!
