    Question ATX extension cable

    Guys,

I have a question. My system (85 percentage finished) contains a custom made case and I use one of those ATX extension cables. These are 20cm. long. This was *just* long enough to connect PSU to MB. But I'm a bit worried cause there is a lot of tension on the cable, because It's just 1 cm too short... sigh.

I was wondering how long this ATX extension cord can be? To make it easy on myself I would just add another 20 cm ATX extension to my setup, so I get 40cm.

I extended it in version 1 of my 'puter to 60cm and it was fine, its a long and tedious job though, lots of soldering and you need to go one by one by one by one to make sure you get them 100%

Why would you do it yourself and risk smoking your MB? (It's a lot of wires, u know)
    I use somthing like this:

its long story, almost as long as my ATX cable <grin>

but it started out like this, once upon a time I decided to use an inverter and then to minimise noise from the inverter I was going to mount the inverter and ATX power supply hidden in the side panels of the trunk, and then use a loing ATX power cable to the MOBO in the centre of the trunk hinge area, the aim of all this was to remove the noise from the inverter etc and to that end it worked really well, to use 3 or more of those extension cables was not feasible due to voltage drop and how do you hide the connector lumps easily ? and besides when you start doing the project you cant wait for part or two, a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do, so I cut and soldered and two hours later it was done, then after a week of working I decided to change to DC/DC power as i got shocked once two many times by the damn inverter and where I am its 240V AC or as my inverter puts out 260VAC its not fun, so i have one modified ATX power supply with a really long lead if some one wants it and I still havent got all the feeling back in my left thumb where i got shocked silly.....

i told you its a long story

Well, I'm lucky they have these things in a store nearby.

It's all hidden in my case, no problem with that.

So you did not get a voltage drop creating your own as you described? Will only two of these things connected together work then?

yip the thumb was damn sore and since the inverter didnt trip out the shock went on for way to long until I could figure out what was going on and use the other hand to switch the inverter off !

I didnt get any measurable voltage drop with my extension, I measured before i cut and joined and then afterwards and the results were the same, I have measured a voltage drop using the PW70A and that extension cable of less than .2 of a volt but still a drop from the power supply output to the mobo, I think thats due to extra connections and the PW70A doesnt have much horsepower to start with so I think it would be more prone to voltage drop, try two and go for it, I think it will work 100%

Ran to the store yesterday for an extra ATX-extension cable and it works fine. (Now I have 2 Atx-extension cables attached to eachother making a total of 40 cm.)

Just to thow my .02 in.

I once made a 10 Ft. PSU extention cable with 16 gauge speaker wire. Worked like a charm. Never got warm either.
