    Opus DCX-3 blowout

I had a strange thing happen to my opus. Things were running fine, then I came out the car in the am, and nothing would fire up .
I tested everything ,and the motherboard is fine.

I looked over the PSU and saw the following. I just thought I would share -

I just picked up a brand new 150W today. I sent back the previous one two weeks ago for warranty replacement. I had two of those same chips (Fairchild FDS6690A) burn up and a near by diode. I'm assuming you could smell that in your car. That much damage will create smoke, I know mine did.

Fortunately, Opus replaced it without much fuss. I did have to email them 3 times to get an RMA issued and then emailed and phoned two more times before they finally realized that they 'lost' my return (don't ask what that means--I dunno). In any case, I got the new unit today and I'm happy again.

BTW, I assume that's the 90W board since it looks a bit different than mine.

That chip blows if you overload the 12V output, on some power supplys if you cool them enough you can get more output then 2.5A but if you dont... see picture above...

Doesn't the Opus claim to have overload protection on all rails? In other words, isn't it supposed to survive a dead short?

It's soposed to, but because the vendors of components change them (they get better every day) without notice every build is different. Some builds tend to have the shutdown a bit higher, which causes some components to overheat before they reach shutdown if not cooled enough..
