i dont see how this will work with those caps there???
Hey Everyone - i have done the research and wanted to make sure that what I am about to build won't light my tahoe on fire! Let me know!!!
Thanks!!!
The goal is to take the car battery to this unit - then get a solid 5V at up to 5AMPS. The most the thing should draw is about 1.5Amps. This is to power an external USB audigy2

Nic: I am not a electronics guy by any sense - this diagram was drawn for me by one of the techs at a local electronic shop. He told me the capacitors weren't really necessary. The diodes are used because the voltage regulator is variable. Should I remove the caps completely? I am definetely looking for input prior to soldering!!!

The caps need to go from input to gnd, and also output to gnd. It's for filtering. Those are not diodes, but resistors

OK - I got everything built and all was working beautifully - until the 10mf capacitor by the 5V out BLEW!The Voltage was running at about 4.9V and the amps peaking at 6Amps. Any idea why it blew? Too many AMPS? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Bah, power your audigy with a 5v from a molex...
ok to make the long story small,
Lm1084 is a linear chip with 5amp capability....(HEAT IS THe ISSUE HERE)
Use a 220UF/ 25v cap on both side input and output... wont blow then ..

Thanks Mastero - I'll give it a try tonight!![]()

Are you putting a heat sink on the Lm1084 ?
-Jesus- King of Kings Lord of Lords
Yes Antimatter - It gets hot - but not hotter than any other heatsink I have seen.
