I finnaly built up the balls to pop the dash on my new car. (I'm not a car guy and I've never poped a dash before so keep to minimal flaming please.) Well I think I know what I'm going to do.
Dash mount a lilly (didn't want to but it just looks like it belongs there so I will). Then I found a perfect spot for an inconspicuous CD drive. The problems is this... The drive will be about 40 inches (wires would need to be 40 inches) away from my motherboard. I've located a 46" IDE cable online (what a monster)
Can I extend the 4-pin molex from the PW-70 to drive or is 40" going to cause me to loose too much power?
I figure I can put the mobo in the glove box. I have a 2.5" HDD and I'd get a 5.25" DVD/ CD-WR for an optical drive? Thoughts?
The other options is a USB DVD drive... I could run the +5v off the PW-70a to a USB hub.
40" should be no problem for the power line. If you're worried about power loss, there are many calculators out there that'll tell you the drop. Using a larger wire will mitigate that. But really, the IDE data is a much bigger concern at that distance (I think 36" is the longest officially supported by the spec?)
I thought 36" was too. I estimate 40... it depends on what sort of 4-wheel-drive electronics are in the way behind my dash.
I'm very excited having popped it. I just with the 4x4 controls came off easier.
wrap tin foil around the cables if your scared of interferance.
IDE specs limit both the maximum and minimum length of the cables, no more than 18" and no less than 10".
The long IDE cable has been done with success. Ignore the specs and give it a try.
