    I've soldered in my relay 4 different ways and it still won't work. Help please.

    OK. I don't have the usual 30 amp automobile relay so I have no pin numbers. I have a Radioshack SPST .5amp relay that I want to wire inside of my inverter that would switch only the on/off switch of the inverter whenever I turn the ignition. I've tried several different configurations but I don't know which pins to connect to what.

    Below is a diagram of the last way that I had connected this relay (didn't work). The labels on the pinout of the relay comes from the bottom of the package so they should be correct. I just need somone to tell me if this is wired up correctly and exactly what pins should go to what wires. Maybe my ground is wrong since it is going to the 3rd prong (ground) of the ac plug.

    ummmm....even if you had it wired properly I doubt very seriously that a .5 Amp relay will work for you. You are gonna need a bigger one....you mentioned this one was from Radio Shack....well you can get a 30Amp Auto relay there for like $5.....

    Also I am hoping that you have a fuse between the car battery and the relay.

    Your setup is pretty much exactly like mine...and I have issues even with my 30Amp relay....I have burnt out 3 in the last couple of months

    also do you have a diode in place?


    Actaully now that I look at you setup I am confused as to why you want a relay attached to the inverter switch.....I believe what you want is to have the inverter turn on with the ignition?

    If so you want to leave the inverter switch alone and wire the relay to the pole that powers the inverter. and the switched power would come from a AMP or your HU or something.....I will post a pic if you need a illustration.

    No way man, 30amp they rape you for. They're about $20 at radioshack. I do agree though, .5amp isn't enough.

    I would not wire it up this way if I were you. Otherwise you need to put some kind of a switch in along with your relay, in case something goes wrong, and you need to kill power quick. I'd also suggest you put a relay on your actual power in on your inverter.

    Edit: Sorry looked at it wrong. I thought you were replacing the switch on the inverter with your relay.

    Ummmm....maybe they cost that much in Atlantis or something....but in the US you can get them from Radio Shack for $6.29....here is linkage

    I think your coil ground may be the cause. If it's hooked to the AC "Ground" then it's probably not grounding. My ground on my inverter does not go anywhere. I ended up having to ground it myself.

    The 30 amp relays are $5 or $6. Do not make me get a receipt.

    Hey man, where you are, that may be, but here in the middle of nowhere, they charge a little more. And all they have are SPDT relays. Don't give me none of your big city crap.

    Heh...well That argument doesn't work on me...they are $6 dollars here as well and I live in the middle of nowhere man. Minot, North Dakota....and no..that isn't part of Canada....<<======= I am always amazed at how many people as me about that

    I guess I will go to the shack and buy the 30amp switch although I know my current plan should work. I am basically using 2 turn on switches inline for turning on the inverter. One, the original flip switch, the other the relay switch. I should not need a 30 amp switch because I am only wiring inline to the power of the turn on switch, not the main power +12v from the battery. This also allows me to hide the relay inside the inverter caseing.

    Theoretically, my inverter should not turn on unless BOTH switches are in the on position. First, the relay should only allow the on/off switch to receive power when the ignition is on. Then, my on/off switch also has to be in the on position to turn on the Inverter.

    I believe someone on this board has also used a 1 amp or .5 amp relay to do this same thing. Either that or it's just alot of wishful thinking on my part.
