Noise from PW-70a and not booting

    Hi,

This is my first carputer project.
I have a VW Golf 5, a Epia M1000, ITPS, PW-70a, Lilliput 7 inch and amplifier. When I first booted my mainboard outside the dachboard to test it, everything ran fine (there was text on the screen). But after I put it in the dashboard I have weird problems:

-My CPU fan spins for 10 seconds, and then MB shuts down.
    OR
-I hear a strange noise (tik tik tik ...) and the fan doesn't spin.

I hope my motherboard isn't broken, or CPU fried? I treid with a nomal ATX power supply, but same problems (aside the noise, whiwh seems to be PW-70a related).
Is there any way I can test if the MB is broken or not? So I will just get me an Opus power supply.

    Thanks

So your saying you hooked it up to a normal monitor and regular ATX PSU?

Yes, I tried to hook it up to my normal PC and CRT monitor at home. The noise is gone, but the fan only spins for some seconds, and then the computer shuts down.
Also, another question; how does the power switch work? Does it give some kind of electrical signal? Or do you just have to close the circuit (connect numbers 6 and 8 on the mainboard) to tell everything to start?

//Also; I am using PC2700 (DDR333) Ram, can that cause these problems? It is high quality RAM from my Mac.

ATX-compliant (in cluding mini- & micro-ATX) motherboards power on the system with a temporary short across the pins. In your case, pins 6 & 8.
If you short the pins for an instant, it comes on. If you short the pins for ~5sec, the PC shuts off.

The M10000 specs PC2100 DDR and you're using PC2700. It could be the problem. Try getting a stick of PC2100 and trying that.

    Does it POST at all?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Sounds like your not getting enough power to the board. You have to be careful with current draw on the 5v line. Typically the board uses the most power right at bootup. Have you tried unhooking the CD-Rom and hard drive?

I tried evrything hooking up to my ATX supply and CRT monitor again, and this time it works only if I change the RAM. So it is not the motherboard.

Now, when I use a multimeter to see how much Volts the ITPS is giving to the PW-70a, I notice it is only 10,80V with engine not running. And 11V with the engine running. Am I missing something here?? I thought my power supply needs 12V? The ITPS is given 14,4V with the engine running, so why is he only giving 11V to the power supply?

Also, can I just give the PW-70a the power straight from the battery when the engine is not running? It is about 13V. Or will that kill my power supply and motherboard?

Thanks a lot already for all your responses!
