That's going to be a lot of waste and heat. Better off finding a 5 amp regulator. But that's why people using switching supplies - more efficient and run cooler.
I was wondering if several of these could be use to alow higher output (5-10 amp). If so this seems like the cheapest way to make a 12v regulator as the input is a wide range. http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM3478.html

What are you talking about it is going to be a lot of waste and heat? All he showed you was the specs of what the part is capable of.
I am in the process of designing a 12V section right now based around the 3488 (the 3478 + clock sync capability) that should be good for about 120W.
Let me know if u need any help or any one to test out your 12V regulator. How much do you figure yours is going to end up costing parts wise?
i'll have a very good approximation of how much it will cost by the end of the weekend I hope...Right now it is looking to be ~$15 in raw material cost in small quantities depending on how fancy I get with the connectors, that is it will cost an extra couple of dollars (again, in small quantities) to do connectors for all the power connections versus direct to trace soldering.
Of course about $6 of this can be had as free samples, which is nice.
Hi,
see the datasheet for MAX668 from Maxim , in free sample.
SEPIC use ......![]()

Thanks for the info. You ever used the chip? Also its a step up converter so would it let me put 18v in and 12v out? if not its not a big deal I can get around that part it would just add more junk to the layout. Digi-key has the maxim ic but they are 5.43 eachits still not a realy bad deal.
Hi have tested for my future prototype......
Its the best! Work correctly from the range 7/16V in Vin ,and Vout 12V perfectly.
Its only TINY 10 pin package, ultra small, .
Your order this chip in free sample from Maxim, 2 pieces its free![]()
I think I will order me some samples. I don't think I will do it enough times to get a compleat power supply (dont want to get this option taken away from others). Could you post a pic of them with some thing in the picture for scale? Also if you have any information on how they need to be hooked up (extra parts and what not) and if they need to have a heat sink let me know.
