    DC/DC Converter

I just bought a cheap dc/dc converter which you put in the cigarette lighter. On the side it says:

Warning: This unit is not stabilized its maximum rating is 800mA and if less current is drawn there is a corresponding voltage rise. At less than 400mA this rise could be considerable.
    What does this mean?

How can I protect against it?

I dont want my mp3 player frying

No way you're going to run a laptop on just 800mA !

AceRimmer, 800mA is not going to be enough to power your laptop. Some alternatives for power:

    - use an inverter and then plug your AC adapter that came with your laptop to it. Make sure you buy a powerful enough inverter.
    - use something like this: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...uct_Id=168834#. This is just a sample of laptop power solutions. I don't endorse either Belkin or other brands.

    Good luck with your search.

Um....no. Get an inverter, or a dedicated DC laptop power supply. You might be able charge a cell phone off of 800 mA. Or a palm, maybe.

Ok my bad, I dont intend to run a laptop. Just a portable mp3 player. Dont ask me why I put laptop.

    But the question still remains

Warning: This unit is not stabilized its maximum rating is 800mA and if less current is drawn there is a corresponding voltage rise. At less than 400mA this rise could be considerable.
Ive done 2 carputers before, this is a new project. For the two carputers I used inverters.
