OPus90W How far has it been taken?

    OK

OPUS 90W powering m10K+HDD. I am assuming thats cool. But what about the 10W hauppage USB2 WINTV/FM am i asking for trouble?

Also was hoping to add my irman BT WiFI + webcam? HAs anyone done anything similar? who has a 90w system running well with a lot of USB addon's? How far can this supply be pushed (obviously to 90W) what is the typical power consumption of the popular carputer boards peripherals etc... is more my question?

    i don't know? anyone?

I know that a M10k+hdd is nothing, and an additional 4 USB devices is nothing. Use the calculator thingy on www.epiacenter.com I'm sure it comes nowhere near 90W.

You need to consider that the power supply provides 3.3 volts, 5volts, and 12volts. 90watts is a fixed split between the different voltages. You get about 30 watts for the 5volts, 30 watts for 12 volts, and the remaining power goes towards 3.3volts and stand-by power.

Grinch - you're telling me that when calculating the power usage, i shouldn't be adding up t0 90, but rather should be adding up to 30 on each line??? i haven't heard that before.... and that definitely changes how close i'm getting to maxing out my PS!!

    the grinch is 100%

you can use this to your advantage as well
by spreading the load across the different rails and even maybe using an externally powered usb hub

in xp in the device manager it also shows how much power the device requires to function on usb typically 500ma a device which is next to nothing !

If you take a desktop P/S and look at the label, you will see the different amp ratings for each voltage. Most people just never bother to read it or understand it.

Formula: Volts x Amps = Watts
On the OPUS 90watt P/S you get:
    - 5volts @ 6A. 5V*6A= 30 watts
    - 12volts @ 2.5A. 12V*2.5A= 30 watts
    - 5volt standby @ 1.5A. 5V*1.5= 7.5 watts
    - 3.3volts @ 6A. 3.3V*6A= 19.8 watts
    - -12volts. @ 0.2A. 12V*0.2A= 2.4watts
    Total = 89.7watts

How do you know if a device operates at 5, 12, or 3.3 volts?

Have a look at the colour wires going to it ?
typical desktop cd/dvd/hard drives consumes power from both 12v and 5v, 12v is yellow, 5v is red, laptop drives only consume 5v
almost all usb devices consume 5v, unless externally powered, mobo devices consumes 3.3v or lots less
fans also sit on either the 5v or 12v rail
read the product and it will probably tell you what it needs
