Thread: PC power supply - no external power switch

I believe theres a wire that you can jump to get it to turn itself on like an old AT style power supply. its like the pwgd or powergood and i think(need 2nd opinion) that you connect it to the +12V rail.

Or, if BIOS supports it, you can just tell it to start up after a power failure.

if the PSU is on, then the pc is on, is that what you want, have a pc that is on all the time or you just want the PSU to be on but not the pc (you can't do that).

On the other hand, you can set your bios to turn the pc on when external power is applied, so that when you switch the inverter, your pc comes on. I know, one of my PCs is shuttle and every time there is power outage, the pc comes on by itself when the power is back. That is how I know that we lost power when we are out.

Unless you want to use the PSU as is without a PC, just a source of power, easy, short the green (PS_ON) to the black (GND) on the connector, that would do the trick.

Yes i'm using the power supply without the PC. I'm going to hook up the carputer eventually but for now I just want to use power supply. I used a paper clip as a jumper to test it and it works fine. Will this cause any harm to the power supply by doing this?

Thanks. I did notice this though... when I have the ps hooked up to the motherboard i get around 12 volts at the molex connectors. When I have it jumpered to turn on without the motherboard, I get around 13.5 volts. What's the explination for this?

thats because your motherboard is using it an it will be taking some of the power.

so just short the green and any black wire and you will be able to start the PSU. I do it all the time to test them.

Yep that's what I did. Any long term problems that may harm the supply by doing this?

no, not with ATX PSU, with good old AT, yes only if you don't load the other rail. You are good to go.
