Why not use the opus to power the drive and the MB?
Hi,
Well first of all im doing this, because all these parts i have lying around.
i have a 200w inverter and atx psu. Now if i short the psu PS_ON and a GROUND and turn it on and then always power my hard drive only of that and use the opus to power the mobo , is that going to cause any harm? I will use a common ground and only the hard drive would be powered of the psu, also is this going to confuse the opus?

Yes, you should search... and Yes, It has been covered before!
Read the FAQ!
That should work fine, as long as the +12 and lines other than ground remain isolated between the two supplies.

i was thinking about doing this also because im trying to run a very powerful setup.
would this work?
titaniumkingpin, the easiest way to do a very high power setup is inverter/PSU with a shutdown controller such as http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_...products_id=65 or http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_...products_id=66
