    Schematic needed, DC to DC PSU

    This is not what you may think it is, what I specifically need is a schematic so I can build something that takes 12vcd in from my car, and outputs + 12 +5 -5 -12 like a normal PSU.

    The reason this is all I need, is I have a mini-pc which came with an external converter, the only thing the PSU on the inside does is seperate the +/- 5/12vdc's into what the motherboard itself needs. So I dont need the whole shabang, just that small part, which is why I have been having problems finding anything on the forum for just that.

    That sounds like a really non-standard setup. You could be in trouble. You'll probably end up with a solution that gives you the ATX connector plug and then take the various wires you need from that to connect to the PC.

    So I dont need the whole shabang, just that small part, which is why I have been having problems finding anything on the forum for just that.
    There's nothing 'just' about that small part. That's what this entire forum is about. It's far from trivial to get those separate pieces.

    Are you sure your PC doesn't also need 3.3V?

    It seemed to me that the whole thing is at the end a power supply just like an Opus. It would also help to have some power requirements for each rail and total...

    Well, the AC/DC converter unit outputs +- 12v and +- 5v (all dc)and has a ground, thats all that goes into the PC. I'd prefer to have 15a on the 12, and 7a on the 5, that'd leave me some leaway for adding more stuff. I've also been debating just buying a 300w DC to DC, as they dont cost all too much, but it'd be nice if I could do thoes for relativly cheap myself.

    I am even more confused here now. Why do you have an AC/DC converter in the car?

    You want to build your own power supply? I hope you know that computer parts are very picky about their voltages, when your engine revs up the voltage changes slightly, maybe even the slightest change can screw up components. I'm willing to bet you are overlooking some security purposes. But if not and you do know what you are doing, I apologize.

    Sounds to me like he has a mini computer with an AC/DC external power brick which supplies +12 and +5VDC to the computer and he would like to replace that with a DC/DC power supply that will output the same. Is this correct, malcolm?

    Correct. Except it also supplies the inverted voltages of the same.

    Heard of all sorts of problems with them, and I'd really like to keep 300w's avalible to me.
