here's my setup. I got a laptop motherboard and the AC adapter for it. I plan to use an inverter to power the AC adapter...
the motherboard has the standard "power_button" header (atleast I can solder one on there).
what can I get that will boot up the PC when I turn the car on in my situation? I don't know what would wouldn't work since I'm not using a standard ATX PSU.

I don't really know where to get one of these ... or if I can use any shutdown controller.
I'll also try shorting the pins together to see if that'll work ... that'd be the easiest way....
!!!! if you search the forum you will find that Mastero is a cool guy who has made a very powerful DC-DC psu and sells them from India and also provides schematics.

The answers are out there and there is another soluition using a 555 IC what is currently pretty active. You really, really need to search a bit more and read through threads as there are a couple of options on the forum.
You should be able to use any of the shutdown controllers with it since you have access to the power switch header. The laptop will turn on and off just like any other motherboard. The CarPC EZ & Pro SDC's work good with controlling the power switch on inverters as well. May be your best and easiest option.
yeah jus thought, if he isnt using a betteryt hen he can't use the 'hibernate when running on battery for X amount of time' function so will have to use a normal PC shutdown controller too.Quote:

You can turn the PC on with a constant to momentary circuit (uses a relay). Passing power to the circuit will cause the output to be shorted for 1/2 a second (configurable). I'll probably be using that to turn my car PC on. I'll see if I can dig up the web site with the link on it.
You can also use relays to keep providing power to PC until it finishes shutting down if you can get 12V off the m/b anywhere. Downside of that is that you still need to trigger the shutdown somehow and hang when shutting down will leave the power on. I'm working on various possible cheap and simple circuits to to solve those. There's no way I'll pay someone $50+ for something that I can put together for under $10 and have fun doing so...
You should also consider getting a DSSC. It's the best-selling and most affordable startup/shutdown controller.
