    Inverter problems

    Hey Guys,

So, I've been trying to hook up my computer in the car but I'm having a hard time. I bought a 400 watt inverter but when I plugged my laptop into it a red light went on and it started buzzing. I guess that means it automatically shuts it down so it wont do any damage because there's either too much power or not enough. Soo, I took that back and got an adapter that plugs directly into my laptop into the cigarette lighter. Again, nothing happened. I bought one of those universal ones at walmart. For some reason I can't power the laptop other than plugging it directly into the wall... any suggestions?

what is the power requirement of the laptops AC/DC converter. You may not have had enough power with the 400 watt inverter.

Is that one of those huge 17" Widescreen laptops, by chance?

I'd agree, it's probably trying to pull too much power..

    Hey

    Naw,
It's an HP 15 inch screen. I've read some of the threads and stuff should I be hooking the inverter directly to the battery instead of the cigarette lighter? I was hopin just to be able to plug it in and have it work

You plugged a 400w inverter into the cig lighter? I don't think that the current provided by a cig lighter outlet can put out enough to power 400w... I'd try hoooking it directly into the battery. A 400w inverter would use probably something in the range of 40-50 amps, which is considerably more than many cig lighter outlets are designed (and fused) for. Hook it directly into the battery, and see how it goes. You shouldn't have any problem running a laptop off a 400w inverter -- assuming the laptop doesn't run a desktop-grade P4 processor. I use a Dell I8600 (1.7ghz P-M, 1GB RAM, 60gb HD, GeForce FX graphics, 15.6" widescreen monitor, etc) and haven't had any issue with my 450W, all while running camera battery chargers, etc, concurrently.

heh - my 400watt inverter came with a cig plug. and your laptop adatper uses roughly 90 watts. At 70% efficency, that's 128 watts. you should be fine. Just try the new wiring.

According to that, you need about 250watts of power to run the laptop. You have not exceeded that with the inverter, unless you also had other things plugged in.

Make sure you connect the inverter to the battery correctly.

    Hey

    Hey,
I haven't plugged anything else into it at all. I was lookin for the inverter to be able to plug into my car and then plug into my girls car without having to hardwire everything but I guess I'll have to do it that way unless there are any other ways. I just wanted to watch DVD's on a 13 hour trip. I have no idea how I'd hook it up to the battery other than I'd have to have the wires fused just in case something happened. Anyone know a tutural link? Thanks a bunch for your help guys.

Also, what about adapters that plug directly into the computer that plug into the cigarette lighter? I had a universal one and it didn't work but I'm assuming if I bought a HP one would it work?

Rule of thumb...inverters rated above 150W should be wired directly to the car battery. Here's a reference...
