I think it's just there to help with cooling or possibly protection, but it dosen't need it in most cases and you can buy the Opus 90w with or without the tray, so removing the tray and mounting it on standoffs won't do any harm.
My Opus 90W is mounted in a steel tray, as I assume they all are. Is there any negative to me removing this and mounting it on standoffs in my case? The steel shield just makes it harder to install.
Other than protecting the board is there any other significance to this piece?
Chris.

Thanks, but... I just took th five screws out and it seems to be pretty firmly attached. I appears there is something in one area between the board and the steel plate that is glued in or just plain old stuck. I'm not willing to try and pry it out given how delicate boards can be so, it looks like one way or another I will have to mount it complete.
Thanks for the response though, and if anyone has any insight on removing the Opus board from the tray please let me know.
Chris.
