yes, you just need to make sure your source can supply enough current to power whatever you're powering with the itps.
you'll also need around 13.5v to get 12v out on the itps.

i'm planning on doing this too. i think i'll in the end have 3 PSU in my car, my OPUS in the back, my ITPS in the front (for my lilliput), and a carnetix 5v to power my USB hub and other USB devices (slot dvdrw). Havent seen a lot of info on people doing this.
edit: (slow dvdrw) should be (slot dvdrw)

shakes, thanks.
Just to make sure. The unswitched white wire is just for the ITPS to continue to provide power for the computer to shutdown properly after ignition is off, correct?
I don't use this feature so I thought hooking up the white wire and the red wire to the same outlet (my cigarette lighter) would be fine.
wow ... talk about overkill. I could see adding the ITPS so you don't have to run another line all the way up front ... but mak a Carnetix is an expensive 5v regulator.Originally Posted by Peoples
I forget the colors, but in a normal application, the switched (IGN) wire on the itps just acts as an 'on off' switch and requires little current. When turned on, the ITPS takes the power from the main power line. So by hooking these together you're essentially making the ITPS draw all it's needed current from the same power source that tells it to turn on and off.Originally Posted by b8bboi
usually this is a bad thing because a typical car's IGN line isn't rated for very high currents.
if you're just going to power your LCD and you're using your cig lighter, it should be fine.

I think he's talking about the P5V (~$25) for +5V USB devices.but mak a Carnetix is an expensive 5v regulator.

shakes, you were right.
The ITPS is officially a piece of ****. It only provides 11.75v and during cranking, it dips down to 10+v. My Xenarc requires at least 11V.
Lucky for me I got the ITPS for free from a friend. I don't know how it even got on the market. ******* piece of crap.
what voltage does your dc-dc laptop power adapter output?

It's 19v. I was intending to let the ITPS regulate the 12V from the car and pass that to the laptop adapter but since it won't provide enough voltage, I'll probably hook the laptop adapter directly to the car outlet. The outlet actually says that it can handle up to 120W, which is more than enough for the laptop.Originally Posted by shakes
This is safe (for both the car and the laptop), right?
