Running an Opus 150W Shuttle revision (fanless) in a case...

I purchased an OPUS 150 for my carputer, the Shuttle model (without fan).

    This one: (DCX2.1215.XPC)

I am planning on putting it in the case, along with the other stuff (mobo, + HD). It all fits VERY VERY tight, but it fits. There's like a 1/2" clearance all around for the Opus. (!).

Am I being stupid? Will this thing generate so much heat that it will burn itself, or any surrounding cables/components?

The case will have an exhaust fan, as well as a fan on the CPU. but no PSU fan.

The attached Image shows planned location of Opus, outlined in yellow...

id like to get rid of the horrible noisey fan on my opus, so id be interested in this too.

Its far to small and noisy for an incar pc.

So, nobody knows about this fanless Opus? Or nobody cares? Need to know if this is dangerous or not!

I run the same PS in my case although my case is not that tight fitting. The only fan that I have is on my CPU although the PS can conduct heat off to the computer chasis (metal chasis) whereas yours looks plastic?

That particular PS is designed exactly that way to disipate heat using the thick aluminum housing and to not require a fan. It was also designed to fit into a shuttle that is tight without fans other than a direct CPU fan.

I personally would think that as long as you have a fan moving fresh air in the case that you should not have an issue. Running it and testing it will be the ONLY true way to know for sure as most carputers are never the same.

Thanks Troy, very informative (and gives me some hope too!)

I am planning to cut the plexi at the top, so the metal is exposed, and heat can be disipated out of the box. Any heat disipated to the interior will be dealt with by the case exhaust fan.

I'll first try this without cutting the plexi, and if it is too bad I will try cutting the plexi and exposing the metal. Thanks!!!!

    Update. IT FITS!!!!

Preliminary tests show temperature will not be a problem, using only the case fan. Will post pics soon.

It is the original plastic drawer that slides under the passenger's seat.
