power inverter problem. help

I got a 300w power inverter that doesnt work when i wire it to the battery but it will work when i plug it into the cigarrete lighter. i ran 4 gauge wire with a 50 amp fuse by the battery and 4 gauge ground. the voltage is the same as the cigarrete lighter. since im getting the same voltage the connection must be good any ideas or something i dont know about?

wire bad unless it is a different termial for each.

Just tried it out with out the fuse connected to the battery and it works. What fuse do i need? I have a 5AG-50A fuse. the output power for the inverter is 300W / 2.6 A continuous and input is 12 VDC 40 A max
