Does this power scheme make sense?

Alright, I am planning and pricing for my CarPC project, I see all these shutdown controllers and DC-DC power supplies. Does it make sense to run a DC-AC power inverter to a UPS battery backup to a standard AC computer power supply. That way the computer would still shutdown after the UPS loses constant power.

The only thing that I could see wrong with this is NOT using a pure sine wave inverter, however I have read mixed opinions on whether this will cause problems or not.

Also space is really not a big issue in this case

I'm not sure I understand exactly how that is related to my question.... and it seems to me that it would be cheaper, whats not efficient about it ? The use of space? Like I said before there is plenty of space in this application.... Has anyone else done this ?

You can go right ahead with your UPS & inverter plan.
We're teling you that it will work, but it's not going to be the best solution. While your outlay of cash may be less at first, you're going to get sick of all the electrical noise, fried inverters, battery drain, going to move it and it's too *(@#$!! big and heavy, hearing this heavy-assed UPS rolling/sliding/bouncing around wherever you put it despite your best efforts to secure it in place....

At some point, you're going to realize how much LESS life yould suck if you'd listened in the first place and went with a DC-DC power supply.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?
