Actually it is exactly the same as using the 2587 only it is a much smaller package. You could probably get 2 amps @ 15 volts in the 8-14 volt input range. You have to look at the application circuit, you will see that there is vin, then there is a coil, then there is a diode, then there is the output. you can think of the coil as just a wire, Your input has to be less than the output by .6 volts or so. It even says it in the data sheet, sorry for the bad news.. :-)

I have used the MC34167T. This can do both step up and step down. So it will take anything from 8V to 16V. With an external BUZ11 it can deliver up to 3Amps!
