The coils are made out of magnent wire which are covered in enamel skin. That is why the ends of the one that have the leads bent are black. Yes the wires have to touch and they have to touch very tightly so that the magnetic field is created.

You can not use pvc jacketed wire and expect to get a coil that will work very well.

Oh, and when you connect the coil, make sure to strip the enamel off of where you want to solder...You'd be surprised how many people miss that step .
