I managed to pick up an old taxan crystalvision 100 lcd monitor quite cheap, and it is perfect for the car, exept for one thing... power!
The monitor needs a 12v input @ 2.2amps, but I don`t want to hook it straight up to the car battery 'cause we all know that the voltage from that varies a great deal ;)
I've got my computer running fine the car, custom dc-dc all the way.. but im using virtually all the amps that the PSU can do at 12v. 12v was also the most complicated part of the psu, it has over 10 components just for 12v... so i don`t really want to do all that again...
The 7812 route seems simpler, but im not sure what the minimum voltage the screen would take... does anyone know how i could find this out?
If it runs on 10v for example, a 7812 based circuit would be fine, it might even run with the engine off.... :)
Also... before u say that the 7812 only does 1 amp, there is a 3 amp version also avalible, called the MC78T12 :D
One last thing..
I know giving the screen too much voltage would hurt the screen, but would giving too little voltage cause any damage at all? I just want to know how much i can experiment...
I might just connect the screen to a 12v battery and see what voltage the screen goes off at....
sorry this post is so long, it`s only my forth :D
thanx
