Opus shutdowns while car is running.

    Specs.
    1.2 ghz
    256 ram
    80gb hardrive
5 usb devices (touchscreen, gps, remote control, shuttlexpress, WLAN)
    optima red top battery

The issue is that my Opus 150 is detecting a low battery and pulsing the power button (hibernating my carputer) while the car is on. This usually early in the day when i first start my car, while sitting in stoplight traffic for maybe 5 minutes. It will also happens after i have driven the car for a while, and try to listen to music while the car is in running in park, after about 10 minutes.

    I'm guessing my issue is:

    1. the detection level for auto-shutdown when the battery level is low for the opus is too high, and is initiating shutdown before i need it.

    2. Leaving my carputer in hibernation all the time is draining my battery to such a low level that it never really gets fully charged in the morning or during the day, causing the battery level to reach the opus level for shutdown sooner than normal.

How do I tell what the real problem is, and how do I solve the problem?
    thanks

put a voltmeter on the battery while running..... if your seeing anything less than 13.5-13.6v you have an alternator problem.... if more then check all connections to the opus... a bad ground can cause this, along with a shoddy power connection....

if the opus is seeing well over 13v & still shutting down then the opus has an issue

ok, just got back from my voltometer test.

    Idle = 13.9 V
Idle + Radiator Fan from air =12 V (about)
    Idle + Radiotor + Headlights =11.5V (about)

The problem tends to happen more in the winter, which I now know is a correlation to me blasting the heat on full.

    Conclusion: Opus is fine,
Does the data provide conclude that the problem is my alternator?
Is it a "problem" or just not powerful enough?

a bad battery can give the same results, but I don't think it would reach 13.9 at idle if it was a bad battery.... start the car, then with it running disconnect a battery terminal.... if the car dies then the alternator isn't charging.... if the voltage at the terminal goes up then the battery may be no good, you'd need to load test it to confirm

yours just sounds like it can't deliver enough amperage under load... check the connections at the alternator & battery.... it may just be a weak alternator or a bad connection, what kind of car is it? how many miles... how old is the battery....

    Alright, the Results are in:

Car runs after dissconnecting a battery terminal

    Voltage Decreased after disconnecting terminal

    Conclusion:
as you said alternator "can't deliver enough amperage under load"

Solution: Check Connections; Buy a new Alternator

    Question:
How do I make sure I buy an alternator that will deliver the right amount amperage?

You may have a bad ground between the chassis and the battery.
