if your computer is in hibernate, you'll get very little drain, however USB device will still drain

You can not splice an AC power chord....because its looking for an AC signal (unless your talking about after the brick). In this case you're laptop must be willing to accept a huge range of voltage , like between 8v-16v for it not to hurt anything. You're best bet is to find a cheap car adapter, and cut the wire to splice that in. You can probably find an HP one for < $35

I have a pavillion zt1135 that is over three years old. The original battery won't take a charge anymore. The pc ran fine from the ac adapter with the dead battery in it or even no battery. The AC power adapter it came with provides 19VDC @ 3950mA. You can run the laptop in your car using an inverter and the AC supply, or get a DC car power supply that is made to be compatible with your pc (about $100). A replacement battery cost me about $100 (last summer). your lappy model # and you can find sources and pricing for the parts you might need.

I was under the impression that during hibernate... there is no drain at all.... since the PC is off... however during standby.. you will have a very small drain.. since the PC still needs to supply power to the memory.. and USB devices..

Hibernate saves the current computer state to the hdd. i've taken my battery out while computer was on hibernate (brick unplugged) and still came back w/o any probs.
