    m2-atx problem

I found some other people on here with the same problem but did not really find a solution to it.
I just got an m2-atx power supply, and when I try to turn it on (either using the ignition or using an external power switch), my system turns on for about 1 second (fans start up briefly, video flashes) and then shuts down.
    Here is the system:
    80GB ide hard drive
    usb gps device
    512MB ram
    althlon xp 2200+
    radeon 9600 video card

I believe that the power supply is big enough to power this (it is 160W and my stuff should use under 100W I think), but is it possible that the video card uses too much power? I'll gladly buy a new motherboard with onbaord video if that's the problem, but I was trying to get away with using old hardware.

    Any other suggestions?

try a different power supply (a normal PSU would work) if it does then you know it involves your m2-atx. I wouldn't think it would be drawing too much power that soon in the startup. I know a house PSU will send a small surge of power out, then of it doesn't see the computer attatched it will kill the power fairly quick. this can cause the symptoms you said.

It works fine in with a normal psu. I was running it with an inverter before. I was hoping it was something I did wrong. it's such a pain to send stuff back.

Video cards are notorius for sapping lots of power. Try removing the video card and either use the on board, or a much more basic card. If you must, buy the cheapest video card you can and try that.

You really should check the FAQ section becuase power requirements of a system have very little to do with TOTAL WATTAGE, but wattage per voltage rail. The M2 will NEVER be as powerfull as most "regular" desktop ac-dc PS since they produce 15 amps on the 12 volts, 25 amps on the 5 volt rail. Your system probably was under those levels, but it is possible they are exceeding the M2 ratings.

You should check the FAQ (and search for wattage calculator) and run it for your system, and check the wattage per rail. If you look for a post I made in the FAQs, I have a link to a calculator that breaks out the wattage per rail.

Mine is doing the same thing. Powers up for a second or two and then shuts down. Is this a bad M2-ATX?
