    Ign Switch

I'm lookign to install a laptop and hard wire it from the battery, to the Dc-DC Adapter. But i want it to shut off when i turn the car of and have the laptop go standby on power lost. i already plan to hook up a Opus 80 watt Power supply in the front using the current radio wires, for my LCD. is there a way to build, or aplace i can get a relay switch so that the line from my battery to the laptop closes when the car is turned off?

there are the two best options to have the laptop startup/shutdown with the car.

    - get a power supply, such as a carnetix, to power the laptop
    - get a docking station

    1) no docking station for my laptop

    2) if a ran power from my battery to the Power supply how would i set it to power up when i put my Key in? Thats the part i'm missing here. I figure theres some sort of Power relay, that i can hook up where my radio is that opens and closes the circut when it's givin power. I.E. put the key in and it sends the OK to the circut to Open, i take the keyout, the loss of power Tells the Circut to close so that my battery has 0 drain on it. and the laptop runs off of it's battery.

What I have done is getting the power line and accessory signal from under the steering wheel. Basically, accessory signal have 12V when you start the car.

Found what i was looking for Here

Need to get a relay and a relay harness, run the cable from the Battery with a Fuse to my trunk, sorta like a AMP run. Then Run the relay off the ACC of the ign. and Put it between the Laptop and the Battery. on the (+). I think that would work. Altho i might still think about getting an Opus to put between the two, and run the screen from there. since the Screen needs >8 watts. i figure that i should be able to get away with 80-100 watt power supply. Just want the power as clean as i cna get it. but i'm wounder if the 100 watt Power supply needs time to power up? or is it pretty much instant? my thoughts behind this, is if i use an OPUS I put my keyin, And go to crank the Car, the laptop starts up, from stand-by. I crank, and continues to start up cause the Opus losses power, but slowly discharges, the laptop doesn't catch the jump in volts, and goes on it's happy way of starting up. The monitor will be on by the time the cranking is done, And there would be next to no loading time, and pick where on the song it left off on like a CD player.

With the Opus, is there a way to Have it "turn-off" after like 3 secs of no power it stops giving power to the laptop and triggers it to standby?

from what i figure, that i'll put a kill switch in the glove box, so that if someones drivign my car i can kill the sytem so they don't mess with my setting if I want... and really **** off my brother. might never get used, but at least i would have a Hard off if i needed it.

    ARGGGG.

Don't take this the wrong way, but this is the blin leading the blind here.

You MUST search for your answer, because it is here, and it is a VERY COMMON QUESTION.

Basically, there is no EASY way to do it. The idea with the relay will not work, because the relay does not"push" the button on the laptop to start it.

    Now search.

To start you off, take a look here http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/sear...archid=1923137 and http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/sear...archid=1923141

A laptop complicates things and I don't think what you have planned will work the way you want it to.

Pretty much you're just putting in a relay that will cut the 12v power going to the laptop when the car is off right? If so then the only possible way I see that working is if you leave the battery in the laptop and set the laptop power properties to put the laptop into standy mode like 1 minute after it goes to battery power. So basically you turn off the car, the relay cuts 12v power to the laptop, laptop switches over to battery power and then goes into standby after the length of time you specify in windows. But now you've cut power to the laptop and while in standby it will be using up battery power (standby still requires power draw, so if you don't have a battery in the laptop then this won't work at all).

Then you start the car back up, laptop gets it's 12v again and then you need it to come out of standby....I guess from a button push or something, I don't use/like standby so I'm not familiar with what it needs to come out of it.

So if you put the laptop into standby it's going to be using up its battery, which should be fine for a little while but depending on your laptop some DC-DC adapters for laptops will not charge the battery, they only power the laptop, so if that's the case then your battery will never get recharged while in the car.

    Red face

    Well... Thank you Mr.killjoy!
    looks like i need to

What i might have to do is use the Non-used PS2 port bay, and wire a second power button using a choped up USB cable. and run it to a button. it would give me the option of waking it while the car's off, and i can still add the kill switch for the button. when i take apart the labtop i'll put in a step by step of what i did to it.

just have to install a port on the laptop so i can unplug it from the car, and not have a cable hangging out the back of it.

then i have to work on a in trunk tray for the laptop so that it sits on it's side and doesn't to bad. but also so i can pull the tray up and have it lock in an upright position. gonna sit down with the ol' drafting table and the abacus, and figure a few of these things out.

I mena i know that things are going to have to change from the first idea, other wise there wouldn't be 100 web-sites of people helping other people do these things.
