    RELAY questions.

This what i figure to be my current plan of a layout.

    The Idea is

Kill switch to stop the power coming from the ign switch, No system start, and the systme will have a 1 min stand by on power loss. so if the kill switch is hit the lcd goes off, and the system will slowly power down.

Relay 1: will open the battery cable so that it completes the circut with the Power supply.

Relay 2: apon getting power it would connect the circut for 1 sec. (ie tigger the On button) And would do the same on Power Off. (to make sure it triggers stand-by mode, and doesn't sit around for a min playing my music over my speakers.)
Then i would install a manual button, so that if i want to Hard turn off the computer i can. and turn on the system while the car is off. LCD won't turn on, but if i wanted to power up the system so i could download from my home Pc it would allow me to do so, with out having to hit the trunk each time and open the laptop up.

For the Realys what type do i need? i'm really new at this concept, but i understand that i can do it.

    so clearify

Relay 1 - On power, Connect the circut, On power off, disconnect.

relay 2 - On power, connects the circut for 1 sec, power off, does nothing.
only question when crank, the ACC power is cut. do i need to put a compassator or somthing in place so that the drop in power for a second isn't noticed. otherwise i turn the Key, and when it hits ACC it triggers the Power supply for 1 sec , and then cuts it, and then triggers it again... and then the power button for the laptop is pressed to wake and then pressed again, don't knwo if'll have any effect on the waking process... but i feel that with the power supply i'm just asking for trouble, or will the Opus/or other DC-DC power supply take care of the moment loss in power with out a hick-up?
Just cuase I ask questions, doesn't mean I stop looking for an answer.

    check out this link

It should help you understand more about relays.

Actually, I don't you really need relays for what you are trying to do.

    thanks,

I am going to need relays, because i cna't run all the power off my ign switch. so i'm going to have to run a line off the batttery, since i don't want it to be powered all teh time i'm going to need to relay it. and wit hthe laptop since i don't want to have to push the button to wake it, so i'm going to bee to install a button outpu on the back of the laptop, and then run it to a pluse relay that sends a pluse (connects the two wires, once to trigger the on-button. (been reading this crap since i posted this :-p )

I see what you are saying, but from your diagram, it looks like you are providing power to your PS through relay 1 that is controlled by the ignition. That is fine, but how are you triggering your PS to turn on? Most PS have three "inputs" Ground, VCC, and "Trigger."

BTW what PS are you going to get? Most laptops run off of voltages greater than +12V.

Lastly, do you know for sure what signal is required to shutdown your laptop?

from the power supply it's going into a DC Car adapert. which i'm going to cut the end off and just run the wires. the reason for he power supply is that i want to keep the power as clean as possible, and i need one for the LCD. the problem with the Trigger on the PS is that i read that it still draws power from the battery. i plan to get all teh stuff, and then test of different wiring ideas.
things that i seem to know are

    1. going to need to install an extrenal power button on my laptop.

    2. going ot need a line off the battery.

    3. going to need to fuse the line in 2-3 places.

    4. going to need to later plan to use a 80 watt power supply. and see how well it holds up.

    5. goign to need to have a way to Trigger the power sp on, and trigger the laptops moment switch. <10 secs, by relay, and have a hard switch for shutting down and manual stand-by. and used for when i turn the car off.

The laptop will go stand-by by it's self after 1 min, but to do so while shuting off the car hit the manul button to skip the delay.

reason for this that i cna't have the realy switch on power down because, A) you start the car, and turn off the laptop... you trun the car off then then it's turned on? and B) just seens easyer the other way.

Looking at the Opus 80 watt, But my Laptop has a Car Plug, which i'm going to cut the end off and hard wire. Takes 12 Volts and turned it to 19.5 volts.
