The idea is to have the pc go in standby when the ignition is off, and if the ignition is not triggered for let's say 2 hours, the pc goes into hibernation...that's the idea, but does it work?
Is this how you set it up Bad?

Maybe I'm not understanding the original question here, but why don't you guys just have the PSU cut power after 10 minutes (do a shuttdown, actually have the PC go into hybernate)
Then when you get back in the car, it'll boot quicker because it's coming out of hybernate.
I personally have my "remote-on" for my amp coming from my cruise control relay. So when I shut the car off, the amp turns off. When I start the car up, I let the pc come on, then hit my cruise control button which turns the amp on. (thereby avoiding the pop noise, because the pc is on before the amp is)

I understand what bad-at-this wants (in fact, I want the exact same functiuonality), and I am susprised what he tried does not work, as this was going to be my suggestion after thinking about it a while.

Have not tried it myself, but it is disappointing that the hibernation does not kick in after the standby has been triggered by the PSU.

I really wish this was possible, because I tend to make several quick stops during a regular day, and the hibernate thing gets really boring.

HAHAHA! Don't be silly. His amp turns on with the SWITCH. Cruise Control can be off while the switch is ON. It's just a bypass in most cars, like Honda etc...

Yeah so most of you got what I wanted... I dont want to leave the computer on all the time, just go to standby and stay there for say 2 hours actaully about 1 hour and 50 minutes so that hibernate can be finished before the 2 hour total kill of power occures.

    Any ideas would be welcome...

Yeah, that's why I'm allways getting speeding tickets, gotta have my tunes man.

Just kidding, the cruise master (on/off) switch is on my steering wheel, it "allows" the cruise system to turn on. Yes, like Hondas.

not that simple. the windows timer options for standby/hibernate assumes the pc is idle, playing music or running other apps will prevent standby/hibernate.the proposed setup seems like a good idea, obviously the PSU would have to remain powered while in standby, but i think worth it for the quicker startup.

Going from from standby to hibernate after an hour or whatever could be done with software. applications can bring windows out of standby (ie mce), so one could create a timer app that wakes the computer after a set time in standby and then issues the hibernate command (or shutdown i guess). Hook up the psu to a relay system that will kill the power once the system enters hibernate (possibly tap leads for usb devices that remain powered on for standby, but poweroff for hibernate). Relativly simple solution, shouldnt be that hard to code. definetely will try when it warms up 3degF, was 60 some days ago...

    d2.n:

The OP suggested that standby be triggered/forced by pushing the power button (actually, by shutting down the car and having the PSU trigger the standby -- but that is exactly the same thing). Whether the computer is idle or not should be irelevant, no?

Main problem seems to be that the PC does not want to go into Hibernate AFTER a certain amount of time in standby has passed...

EDIT: Also, in my PC, when going into standby the CPU fan remains ON. I really don't like that.

regarding idle and triggering the initial standby command, since op is using laptop wanted to point out that the system wont go to standby if not idle, probably obvious.

doing a quick search it appears as if many report the exact same problem (standby->hibernate). Thats why i think it would be necesary to create an app that would bring the pc out of standby and then trigger hibernate.

justintime: the CPU fan remains on? what type of system? i was under the impression that standby kills the cpu fan, maybe the psu fan at low speeds may need to spin, but the cpu fan shouldnt.
