5A should be fine.

Hi,
When i used my Arise DCDC (865V) it had a 12V 16A Fuse soldered directly onto the board. So i currently have a 15A fuse attached to the 12V source line in my car, i figured 1A lower than the max would ensure my source line fuse would blow before the one on the psu does. Changing the one on the psu involves much more work.
My homemade psu supplies +5V/10A and +12V/6A. The system uses about 7A on 5V line and about 2A on 12V. What is a proper fuse to use for this kind of system.
I wasnt sure if 15A fuse is still appropriate, or that i move to a lower rating of between 10-14A.
Anyone know more about this?

Don't you think 5 amps is a little low? How did you come up with that number? I was figuring, 24 watts + 35 watts is 59 watts. 59/8 volts = 7.35 amps. 59/12 would be 4.9 Amps. That is assuming that the supply is 100 percent efficient.
59*1.20% = 70.8 watts for 80 percent efficiency.
70.8/8volts= 8.85 amps.
70.8/12volts= 5.9 amps.
70.8/15volts = 4.72 amps.
It is my guess that a 5 amp fuse would blow right away. Maybe I'm over looking something. If it was me, I'd use a 10 amp fuse.

5A slow-blow. Or a 7.5A regular fuse. Either way, 10A or 15A is too big...

If the load is 5 amps, and you use a 5 amp fuse, even if it is slow blow, won't it still pop given enough time?Originally posted by Aaron Cake

I personally wouldn't use a slow blow fuse because if there happend to be a fault in my power supply, I would rather the fuse not wait for the supply to catch fire or melt before it pops....
Here is what EDN reccomends on fuse selection:
