    Linear Power Supplies

I know they are not the best, but has anyone done it successfully, and how hot did it run? I tried a search and all I came up with was don't do it.

    Re: Linear Power Supplies

I ran my first system on a full linear system. It was only a P90 and it only worked with a specific 540MB segate hard drive I had since it wasnt fussy about the 12rail! Remember that a 12V liner reg will need about 13.5-15Volts to get 12V out....

It ran hot, but I had it on a big heatsink and a nice cooling PC case fan over that....

Basically unlesss your not going to run a system with any balls...... linear regs are no good....... you really need a switching supply....

Thanks for the reply. I'm just starting out, I'm pretty proficient with electronics, but I have no time and no budget. I'll be building with parts from the computer store dumpster near my house, probably a P-90 with a 420 meg Hard Drive. I have everything I need except the power supply. I'm going to try the linear approach for now since I have all of the stuff lying around. If I find I like it, I'll invest some time/money in a sproggy design.

    Again, Thanks
