    switch option on a M1-ATX

I've got the following PSU http://linitx.com/product_info.php?c...roducts_id=598

I want to wire in a switch and noticed that it has an optional on/off switch out put.

Can someone explain how I use this? It says it runs in parallel with the motherboard on/off switch. Can I connect both up and as long as the manual switch is on the pc will come on? As long as it's off then it wont?

Do I need a special switch or will a standard rocker switch work?

    cheers

I think they are switch outputs not inputs.

One of them goes to your mainboard on/off push switch for the M1-ATX to send a 'pulse' to turn on/off your mainboard.

The other one in parallel can be used for turning on/off your amps or other electronics I suppose.

Are you thinking off a 'manual override' type on/off switch to turn on/off your M1-ATX?

Actually there is 3 of them:

J8:goes to the mobo switching pins.
J9:goes to an optional switch (in case that you want to power on/off your PC without turning on/off your egine) *optional*
    J6:controls AMP on/off

thats correct so how do I use this optional switch?

it works in parallel so can I have both connected or is it either or?

yes you can have both connected. lets say that you have you car on but you want the PC off, so you press the optional switch and the PC will power off.

The switches you need are like pulse switches, (you don't "switch" them, you just temporarily make a contact, its only closed for as long as your pressing your finger on it). You could have as many switches as you want in parrallel, and they will still work.

Because you don't switch them to ON or OFF, wiring in an extra switch will not/cannot stop your computer from booting.

What you should use is a momentary switch. A maintained switch will work if you turn it on long enough to start up and then turn it back off. It will be unpredictable if you turn it on and leave it on. You could try it and play around with the settings in Windows and your bios, but switches are cheap, get a new one.

What if I put a stich on the ignition feed?

If I have this switched off and turn the car on then it wont start. If I have it switched on and turn the car on it will?

    Would that work?

    cheers

The M1 will only allow the computer to be switched on (either by pressing a switch or by the M1 "pressing" a switch) if the ignition feed is live.

So wiring in the switch in the normal manner will not allow you to switch the PC on if the car's ignition is off.

What exactly are you trying to achieve with this (or any other) switch?
    • Be able to use the PC with engine/ignition off?
    • Be able to reboot/turn off PC when engine is running from the drivers seat?
    • Stop the PC from booting when starting up the car?
    • Something else?
