    Loud Noise at power up

Hello, I'm new to this forum and here are a few questions -- please help if you can and thanks in advance!!

I have a car mp3 (p3-1 gig, WIN 98 w/256 meg RAM) setup running through an inverter with an ATX p/s and interfacing the head unit with a tape apdapter.

    (1) I hear a loud noise when I turn on the power supply/system coming through the speakers. I think it's the motherboard sending voltage to the sound port, but I'm not sure. Anyway any ideas on how to mute this? -- I have grounded the p/s and I don't hear any noise during normal operation, only during startup.

    (2) The PC speaker beeps through the sound card/speakers during the POST test of the BIOS -- can I mute it? I haven't found a setting for this in the BIOS.

    (3) What are the auto shutdown controllers that I have been reading about here? Are they the same as when I push the power button on my ATX p/s and it shuts down windows and turns of the computer?

    Thanks again for any information!

    Dave

    Congrats on your first post.
OK to answer the questions, here goes.
    1) The sound through the speakers probably has something to do with the inverter. Most people here are going to say ge a DC-DC pwr supply, and while Id agree, there are a few thing to check first. Try powering the pc in the vehicle from an extension cable from your house. I doubt the problem will occur using mains power. If the sound is still there, try a different supply also.

    2) Are you using on-board sound? Or a PCI card?

    3) Auto shutdown controlers basically shut your PC down in a nice way. They generally keep the PC running for 5-10 minutes after you turn off your ignition, and then start the shutdown process. This does 2 things. Firstly if you get out of your car for fuel or whatever you wont have to boot up the computer when you get back in. Its still running. Great if your in and out of the car alot. Secondly it lessens the damage to your HDD. By just cutting the power some people believe you can creat bad sectors and such. I wont get into this again.....................its another arguement waiting to happen.

    car mp3 questions

    Genesis,

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm still confused about the startup noise as it used to happen with a different m/b and a DC-DC power supply on my first car mp3 system. I will try using an extension cord and power from the house, but the more I think about it, I remember hearing it on my in house (test) setup.

Also, I'm using on board sound with a sound blaster enabled BIOS setting..... any other ideas on why it is beeping?????

    thanks

    Dave

    Re: car mp3 questions

    dave,

try a better sound card, like a SB Vibra 128/Live! sounds like your onboard sound is noisy, and could be getting extrnal interference. It might be from the harddisc, since it happens during startup and that is when u get most of your HDD's thrashing,spinning.... etc...

and regards to the The PC speaker 'beep-beep' cant be muted, I had the same problem with my ASUS mobo - made me go out and buy a sound blaster instead!! the noise was VERY loud!! Im guessing you have a AC97 chipset onboard sound card....

    ciao

    Magnetik,

Hey thanks for the help, I will try a sound blaster -- however, the startup noise is a loud pop that lasts for a split second as soon as I turn on the computer. Do you still think that it is hard drive or other noise? Thanks again

Do you have the computer itself grounded? It could be discharing through any availible means when it first starts up, including the lead to the speakers. Also, do you have an internal speaker connected to the motherboard? If you dont, the board might be rerouting it to the onboard sound.

I get the same thing. as well as a POP on shutdown.
I think it's the surge to the system at initial startup as all the components get powered up w/ +3.3v,+5v,+12v,-5v,-12v just the +5vsb(stand by) should be on, and depending on how the analog section of the soundcard is designed (class A, AB, ...) the circuit will bounce as it finds a stable voltage for a 0Vac output (silence) this is the !PP! that is heard.

Try delaying the start so the inverter PS and amps are afew seconds after each other and power down in the reverse order.

the only way to stop those 'pops' is to turn off your amp/headunit before the computer, and turn on the PC before the headunit/amp. Most good car amps have a delayed turnon so that the amp powers up for a few seconds before cutting in the audio signal....
