Question Using Invertor While Car Running...

    Hi All,

I have been speaking to a friend (who happens to be very good at mechanics and electrics) and he has told me that invertors should NOT be used while your running your car (unless you use a 2nd battery which is trickle charged from the main car battery). The reason is due to possible feedback that causes some problem with blowing something to do with the ignition.

He showed me an invertor (450W) and the warning light came on every time he starts the vechile (maplin invertor).

I want to install 2 monitors, a sky box and a Gamecube to my car, but now I'm worried about not using the invertor without a 2nd battery.

Can anyone help?? My friend mentioned invertors that can work without possibly causing problems but he said they are about £600. My budget is £200 for the invertor tops.

    Cheers

    Carl

P.S Also any links to sites selling invertors would be useful.

I think he's yanking your chain, although I'm certainly no expert.

Did his example have the inverter plugged into a cigarette lighter? If so, that's likely the reason for the warning on the inverter. I had to wire mine straight to the battery for it to work properly.

I don't have any upgrades to my car's electrical system whatsoever, either.

Granted, the inverter is only a temporary setup.

i've had my invertor running since aug. 05, i have my invertor and lcd screen running from my cig lighter wiring. it does beep when it starts for 1 second, i think that's normal... haven't read up on it, but i haven't experienced any problems with the setup.

I have had my inverter (£40 Maplin one) running for 3 years now. No problems. No modifications to electrical system. Inverter connected straight to battery.

Though I don't use it for the computer I've used an inverter in my car off and on for the past year and a half with no problems at all (cig lighter and direct battery connection). They aren't very tolerant of voltage drops (starting a car) but I've never heard of one damaging a car's electrical system.

    Hi All,

Spoke to me mate tonight and he told me that the problem is to do with the Electronic Ignition in the car. Feedback from AC can go back to DC curcuit and this is what causes problems.

He did tell me that one way to stop this is to solider diode wrong way round, positive to negative somewhere along the lead from the battery.

    Cheers

The other solution would be to use a DC-DC power supply...

Yet another good reason to dump the inverter.

Do you all not have power outlets at home?

lol.....jk, but seriously, there's never a reason for an inverter....ever.

Compaq and their non standard atx PSU's?

although I may have a way around that, just got to find my spare 14 pin Compaq ATX connector.
