Playing CDs w/o powering up the whole system

Hi all. I'm not sure if this post is in the right category ... I figured it had somethin to do with power, so I put it here. Feel free to move it if need be.

Let's just say I wanna listen to an audio CD without powering on the whole system ... how would I go about doing this? Would there be any commerically available circuit that allows for this, or is this more software-related? I just think it will be nifty to be able to play audio CDs without having to wait for the entire Car PC to start humming...

I haven't actually done my system yet - I haven't even got any parts! ... just making a list of parts and prices, and I thought I mite wanna include some feature like this.

    Any help is appreciated.

Supply power to the CD-ROM drive only and diode it back to the main power supply. But this assumes: you have a CD-ROM drive with headphones out and that you tee headphones out back into your audio stream some how.

yes but to do that you need a cd-rom with play buttons or a remote like the old creative ones.
