    Connecting HD straight to Batt.

I have my sproggy working now, but it seems i dont have enough power, same old symptoms, HD spins-dies-spins-dies. I hooked up an AC psu in the garage, and it works, fine running the mobo off the sproggy, and the hd off the ac psu. So what do i have to do to connect my HD straight to the batt? I assume this will give me enough on the 12v rail. Or will i get more voltage if i have the car running?

I think a new sproggy design, with amped up 12v and 5v should be in the making about now... this problem sounds common.

Well, someone did do this, for over a year (thats their story) and they apparently had quite abit of sucsess with it, bit I wouldn't recomend it..... a low dropout 1amp regulator (yes aaron, linear, lol) should provide enough current to spin up the hd, with the mobo still being powered by the sproggy....

I have no idea off the top of my head what the tollerances on a hd are as far as voltage in goes, but I'd guess that its pretty pickey (say+- .5vdc). The vdc in your car can swing from ~14-15vdc with the car on, down to 8-9vdc when cranking, and im guessing the hd wouldnt like it too much. id go with mp3kid's advice and use some sort of regulator.

A HD SHOULD still spin up with as low as about 11volts input... my car doesn't drop below this when cranking, so, theorecically, I can still power up my system while cranking, but why would I want to do that???
