    Powering Compaq Laptop

Recently found MP3 - AWESOME! I am planning to use my old compaq presario 1500 laptop as my first car computer, 2.2 pentium4, 512 gig ram. I have read several threads on powering off and on the laptop. Is it safe to wire a regulated power inverter to power on with the ignition switch and to solder the connections on the "Power ON" button on the laptop? Are there other solutions?

I will have tons of other questions, thanks for your patience and input!
