    UPS managed shutdown

I've been toying with the idea of putting a small UPS inline with the power supply.. setting the power management to hibernate when the battery is down to 98%

Has anybody thought of this or tried it?

Someone in another forum mentioned needing a UPS for a car-puter (using Standby instead of actually shutting down), and it got me thinking.

I've never taken one apart, but it seems like you could remove the AC-DC conversion part, and run your vehicle's power right into the UPS battery (if the voltages matched up). You might even be able to remove the DC-AC converter and the AC power supply in the PC and keep it all DC... But yeah, it seems like a UPS would be a simple way of getting around a lot of power problems...

Is it even possible for a machine to go from suspend to hibernate?

I assumed you were thinking of first suspending the machine, then when the battery gets to 98%, tell it to hibernate. If you were not, well a PC running without being suspended will drain the battery *completely* in 2 or 3 hours.

once it's hibernating power consumption is 0..

hibernate copies your ram to your hard page file then powers down your machine.

suspend is merely a low power mode.

Yes I know this. In your original post you said you would use the UPS to set the machine to hibernate when the battery is at 98%. Do you mean then, that you would leave your computer on at all times, running at full power, and then presumably when the battery decreases to 98%, suddenly go into hibernate?

This would seem silly, as the longest you'll be able to have the machine "on" is at most 1 hour before it gets put into hibernate. If you were looking for a way to leave the machine 'on' so that you would not have to wait for it to boot, suspend to ram might be a better option for you, and you could leave the machine in that state for days with only a 5-10 second boot each time.

eh.. no.. the computer would most likely hibernate with in 10-15 minutes..

my accessory line shuts down cold when i shut the car off I'm looking for a way to avoid having to manually shutdown/suspend etc.. and not just cut power

I was planning on that.. but if the line goes cold how does the computer recieve power waiting for the shutdown? Maybe I just don't understand how it works

Remember, in Jeff's shutdown controller, you have wires from the battery, as well as the ignition wire connecting to it. So if the ignition wire is cold, the battery still supplies it with power.

Or, how exactly does a ups estimate its remaining load? by voltage? not knowing what voltage it runs at, or cuts out at, if you had a cheap ups on hand, you could removed the battery and just use the line conditioner and controller that shuts down the pc. (ie loose the battery and ad>dc inverter).
