Your reasons not to use this??????

    http://www.tripplite.com/products/in...m?model=APS512

Apart from the cost, size and weight of the unit, what would be the reasons not to use this unit for a multimedia carputer system?

Tripp Lite makes good stuff. You need to read the specs on it to make sure its gives power clean enough for computer use, it may be designed for power tools and such. An inverter this size is way overkill.

what kind of info tells me if this is clean enough?

The advantage to running this is that I can use the power outlet to run a standard dolby digital dts amp off the inverter too giving me an awsome 6 channel DTS sound option for about $150, something not possible for that kind of cash with standard car audio setups.

Also, I plan to use a 1ghz computer setup with 512 or 1gig ram and USB cameras front and rear in the car too (yeah I know I'm a maniac) - the best part is that it is all going in a 2 seater roadster

But anyway - what is the key element to getting clean power - there are a lot of specs shown at the web site.

    It is clean enough...

Output Waveform (Line Power Mode) :Pure Sine
Output Waveform (Battery Mode) :PWM Sinusoidal

They also mention this under Typical Apps:

    Extended Run UPS
Configure as a UPS for long-term battery support of telecom systems, security alarms, computer systems and various other motorized and electronic loads.

    Still an overkill though!

    Thanks guys,

This is only one option we are considering for our project car, the advantage of this is that one of our sponsors carries this line so we may get it for free, so overkill - yes but free is a wonderful thing.

Tripp Lite makes smaller versions if you still want to use an inverter. theres not really any reason you couldn't use that one. If you had an RV with a network and a bunch of PC's it would be great. I'm planning on skipping the invertor and running my system straight from 12v to save space/ weight / and decrease complexity. I don't want to have to turn the invertor on and off every time I shut off the engine. The small invertor I have says in it to turn it off as is will drain the battery if left on.

Well if its all free, you might as well do it right!

Get the PV1000HF permanant 1KVA inverter...

combined with the Smart Online SU1000RT2U Pure sine Wave output (line or internal battery) UPS system...

    http://www.tripplite.com/products/up...del=SU1000RT2U

This way, you will always have a perfect, clean sinewave to power your computer AND not have to worry about it having any problems if you turn off your car....

(just kidding, get a ACE-916V.. its worth the money)
