first off i want to say sorry if this has already been discussed. Ive read for many hours for a few days now and cant seem to find a direct answer.
I have an inverter that is tie right to my battery(not fused, which i have read i should, so i will). this inverter has a kill switch on it. I have a laptop plugged in and a extrernal dvd rom plugged in. When ever i crank my car the inverter squeaks and the power sometimes is cut off for a second and in turn makes the dvd rom reset, this stops anything i was watching on the dvd. this does not happen everytime, just if i crank for too long. i can also leave the car in acc, so the screen is on, and leave the inverter on and it works fine. is this a cheap inverter problem or do i need a tank circuit or what?
thanks for any help, and if this is already posted please give me a link

man i keep thinking of more stuff and responding to my own post
i also know that the resistor need to be moved and the diodes are faced wrong.
one more question, what gague of wire should i use?
thanks one more time

Hi,
You say your powering a laptop. Why not get a Dc-DC PSU with an output of 19v for your laptop.
I don't think inverters are reliable, and you need reliablity when your working with computers. IMO

First of all, the FAQ Emporium subforum is for informational posts ONLY.
Please pay attention to what subforum you're posting in before you post next time. I've moved the thread to an appropriate forum.
Next, the inverter with a laptop is a kluugey solution at best. Inverters rarely survive engine cranking. Granted, a DC-DC car power adapter for your laptop wouldn't survive cranking either, but it's a far more efficient means of powering the laptop.
In order to pull off what you want to do, yes, you'd need a tank circuit. There are numerous discussions of tank circuits on these forums. All you need to do is search for them.
thanks for the help.
Im not using a DC to DC b/c i have an extrernal full size dvd rom. The rom uses a AC plug to power it. Is there a way to power it from the DC to DC or should i just buy a different external and use a DC to DC? Another question that came to me when i was look around is how do people power those slim DVD roms?

You could power it from one of the regulators like the Carnetix P1900 without problem. It's a bit more advanced than the car adpater for your specific make/model of laptop.
The slim CDROM drives would be powered the same way, althought they require a different voltage. Full-sized optical drives require 12v (and possibly 5v as well), while the slim drives require only 5v.
so you cut the AC wire and solder it on?
