Need help on power on pulse

Been working on this circuit with little success so far.
My current circuit is mainly using a bunch of nand gates.
Looking for ideas on a new circuit approach.

I need a circuit that does the following.
When the car turns on and power is on the accessory socket for 2-3 seconds, then a pulse is sent to a relay which will wake my notebook from suspend. I also need a pulse when the car turns off to put the notebook back in suspend. The pulse needs to be short enough so the relay doesn't close that long.

    555

Would a 555 chip work? also do you have a copy of your schematic? (both before and after you converted everything to nand gates)

And you say people actually pay money for M$ Windows?

Total re-design underway: on the whole progress is very slow as the car is taking up too much time :)

I have tried using the 555 timer, but so far I have not been able to generate a pulse yet.
    Current circuit using nand gates.
