    Invertor Question

I'm going to buy an invertor soon to power my computer + lcd. MY goal is to make a car mp3 player i can just take right out of the car and use at say a friends house and such. Thats not the hard part. But it kind of limits out the DC-DC PS.

Should I get an invertor that hooks right into my cig lighter? I don't think thats the best idea.. let alone with random wires sticking out from it. So i'm thinking of going right from the battery. Can anyone recommend a invertor that can go right from the battery.. or do i have to mod one?

Most of the higher wattage inverters require that you wire them dirrectly to the battery, and provide ring teminals for you to tie into with your own power runs. Most of the units over ~300w (the Portawattz Statpower 300w only has a cigarette lighter tho) have these, atleast in my experiences. You can also always just chop the end off of an inverter that has a cigarette connector, but that has a slight impact on the warrenty .

ok.. a lot of the ones i've seen have the battery clamps at the end. I guess i can just snip those right off when i move it into my truck.

you dont have to snip them... just get some 8 gauge wire and make your own connectors (they sell the stuff at electronics stores and car stereo stores)

just mod the inverter, and dont get a 300W inverter unless u want it for camping, etc too.... , save your cash, a 140W inverter is more than sufficient and alot smaller too....

Depends on what type of setup he's looking to use, but I couldn't even get a old P166 Compaq to power up off a 150W inverter. Im always along the lines of bigger is better for future expansion

    Any autoshut off inverters?

Tons of inverters I've seen have auto shutoff after a certain amount of time ...

I was wondering if anyone has seen one that shuts off the second the car is turned off? I would be wiring an inverter straight to the car battery, but still dont want the inverter to draw power after car is off....

OR am I misreading the meaning of "auto shutoff" ... does the inverter just drain whatever power it has has then shuts off?

    Just really confused,
    Thanks,
    Vikram

    @ vikrampant

To shut down your inverter why not use a relais wich would work at the place of switch of the inverter ?
You could wire the Relais directly to ignition voltage ! o i think it would do work 4 u ??

    Regards

your kidding right? I would be worrying about the quality of that inverter..... since I can run my Duron 800 nicely with a 140W.... plus my 5.6inch TFT/HDD/etc.... hrm....

Nope, everything coming on line would overload the inverter. How powerful of a psu do you have powering your setup? And the inverters that power themselves off isnt after a certain period of time, rather, its by a voltage level usually. Usually when the voltage it gets drops to ~10.511vdc it will go into fault mode to prevent it from draining the battery completely.
