5v DC power supply for us heavy USB laptop users..

    http://www.trcelectronics.com/Meanwell/sd-50a-5.shtml

About $40 dollars and this will power up to 10amps @ 5 volts. They also have smaller versions but this gives you the most bang for the buck. Most of you may use your computer power supply but this is more of a solution for us laptop users who dont have a large power supply to start with.

It takes 9.8 to 18 volts input and regulates it to 5v output. 70% eff rating

Why 10 amps? Why not? Think of it:
    2~3 amps for DVD-R drive
    500mA for Wifi
    250mA for Bluetooth
    100mA for Shuttle express
    500mA for HQCT
    400mA for XM PCR
    100mA for Touchscreen
    50mA for mini usb keyboard
500mA for sound card (if usb)

    Thats almost 7 amps!

1 powersupply to power all your usb hubs and your hqct and external DVD drive. I have used this for about 2 weeks now and everything runs great.

I, and a couple of other people here, use the 12v one. There are 15W, 25W, and 50W models. These are just DC-DC converters -- there is no SDC.

I was heavily considering this one but the 70% efficiancy rating worried me. I'd rather not have a component that wastes so much power making heat. Just a thought for anyone who might want one

70% really isnt too bad for cheap regulators. As long as you dont put it in a confined space, it should be fine

oh it would definitel be in a confined space. which is why im staying away

I love the fact that it has a it's own casing. Easy install with screw down terminals. But the heat man, the HEAT!

Not really. You would have to buy 3 carnetix 5v POL units to get 9amps, this unit does 10 amps for only double the price of the carnetix(Actually less than double)

but alot of that will be wasted putting out heat.
