    psu or inverter

Ive got a 300w inverter (1000w surge) that was powering my laptop and lilliput screen (till the laptop busted) since then i put in my dell optiplex which has a power supply with max 150W..
So thought cool that will do, anyway if i do any cpu intensive stuff or reboots the inverter starts alarming that its being over loaded and sometimes turns itself off, so i obviously need a bigger inverter...

Now on ebay i can seem to get a 600w inverter for like £60, but would it be worth me getting a dc ->dc psu instead? as it would help in noise reduction (As the inverter fan is quite load) but I cant find anywhere that sells these psus and an average cost?

I dont really want to spend a fortune on my car pc, so what kinda price am i looking at for a dc psu and where can i get them from?

Since you listed a price in pounds, I'm going to assume you're int he U.K.

ok i tested my ouput of the dell and its max of 100w when booting, then normal use is like 50w. so theres no reason for this inverter to be alarming and then turning itself off if its meant to support 300w!!

ive got a nikkai uint like this = http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Nikkai-DC-...QQcmdZViewItem

can anyone suggest an inverter that will really actually power 300w, as this what i really need..

im worried they just lie with most of these stating "300/500w" when realistically they cant do anywhere near this power!

    Tripp Lite 375 watt

    I'm using a 375w inverter by Tripplite.
    PC+LCD+Inverter draw 90-100watts.

    got it here http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2....d=2164895&AK=1

Just curious, have you measured the voltage supplying the inverter when it alarms, could be you supply wires are under sized and attenuating under load.

What's the max wattage supported by your lighter plug lines? I assume you have an inverter plugged into your cig lighter plugs...

The cig lighter branch I am using is fused to 15A by Volkswagon.
If my setup ever draws more than 10 amps(120-150watts) I'll prolly run some new copper from the battery.
