    simple wiring question

I am upgrading the wiring to my inverter from a 12ga to a 8GA as it turns out I should have at at least 10ga before and a 8ga amp kit was cheaper than a roll of wire at 10ga.

My question is according to this post FAQ: Determining proper gauge wire/fuse size/battery size/alternator size you can use a 12ga wire for up to 50amps in runs upto 4ft so I would assume it is safe to leave my 8in running from the battery into the switch relay box and the 4in runing out of the box and soldering the 2 wires together it should be safe correct?

also sorry for the noobish queston,

    but at least I first

    Thanks in advance,
    Yonu

    Inverter FAQ
The size of the wire is determined by the amperage draw and the length of the run.
Check about 1/2 way down the page.

Oh yeah, BE SURE TO USE AN INLINE FUSE. CAR-B-Q-S ARE NO FUN!!!

it is fused and I have the size of the wire determined already I am simply asking if the 12in of 12GA will be a problems since 12ga is good for upto 50amp in 4ft runs

not trying to be a jerk just needed to know if that would matter

If i've read the post correctly, you want to leave about 12inches of 12ga running from your battery to the box and then solder a 4inch length of 12ga from the box to your 8ga wire?

Technically the cable sizes should be alright but if its only 16inches of wire, why not just change them?

At least make the 8ga run straight to the box.. you won't have to join two different sizes together that way. Less connection = less possible problems.

the reason i want to leave them is that the relay that the 8ga wire will be feed from is in a aftermarket relay box that maxes out at 10ga so to keep it feed by the relay I have to leave the 12ga in placeand since at most it is 1ft of wire I was hoping it would be safe to leave it like it is

Fair enough, just make sure that connection is strong and has good contact!
