no, do NOT "ground" as 120v device (powered from an inverter) to a car chassis. That is very very bad.
Humming is likely a power issue. Try a different inverter.
Ok, I got my 15" dell ultrasharp screen above the passanger seat glove compartment, a dell 4600c computer in the trunk, and the best buy 750W continuous power supply in the trunk. I finally got the sound hooked up today and tested everything out. The monitor is making a weird humming noise and so is the audio from the computer at high volume.
I figured I have to get a ground loop filter for the audio, but do I ground the power from the computer monitor? Can you ground a 120V device onto the car chassis?
I took the monitor home and tested it and it doesn't make noise at home... So it would be nice to have this fixed, the audio too.
Thanks

What are the good brand names? Which are the best? I'm using a vector from best buy and it makes my monitor and speakers buzzz.
is there a reason you are using an inverter?
are you opposed to using a DC-DC power supply?

well, i'm using a dell 15" ultrasharp and its humming with a regular inverter. so i need a better one. my carpc is a dell dimension 4600c... The audio buzzes at high volume. I connected my laptop to the inverter and the audio buzzes at high volume, off the laptop battery the audio is clear.
ok, so I guess I need a Pure Sine Wave inverter. Thank you Bizarro for the FAQ. Now what are the good brand names? I would need about 400-600W...
How do I go about using a DC-DC inverter with my monitor and computer?
how to use a DC-DC PSU you mean?
You're not inverting anything, so it's not called an inverter.
How do you use it?
I think some reading is in order. You need to look at some work logs, some diagrams, and some PSU manuals to understand it.
Basically, the DC-DC PSU would replace your PSU for your PC that you're using now.
