    Its alive

I hooked my cheesy linear regulator up to an old MB today and ran it off the battery with the engine off and got the MB to boot. So I plugged into my good mb in the mp3 player and it booted.

Thats nice.. lol.. I have been using a linear supply to run my carputa off and on for a few months now.. how did you go about it??? Mine is 3 * LM1084-5 for the 5volts, 1 * LM1084-12 for the mobo (I am goign to replace this with a lower current low drop out regulator) and 1 * something, low drop out regulator 12volt.. lol The problem with the 1084-12 when the engin is off is that it doesn't regulate.. :P and with a 12.5 volt in, the output is like 10.5, which the HD doesn't like, but teh mobo doesn't mind... BUT!!! I extended the PS input wires by about 30cm (12inches), which caused a SLIGHT voltage drop, and now the system won't boot without teh car running.. lol... ITS TIME TO BUY SOME POWER CABLE!!!!!! lol

I have a pair of LM1084-5 for the 5v because my MB pulls 5A on the 5v line so it would have maxed one. LM1084-12 for the 12v line and LM1084-3.3 for the 3.3v line. A 7805 for the 5vsb. Maybe since my MB is kinda low power and the hdd is a laptop hdd it works. Mine see,s to regulate just fine. When it try it indoors running off the 12v from an old AT power supply I get about 10v out, but off my car batter its fine. How old is your car battery, mine is a 2000, still stock. Once I get mp player mostly working I am going to pull my stock airbox and drop a K&N cone filter lower in the fender, then add in a battery tray and a second battory and isolator, so then I won't have to worry about a voltage drop when starting, and can run the player without runing my main battery dead. Now I just have to get sounf into the factory radio, if I get home early enough tommorrow night I will ull it out and open it up and see. Have to have the daylight though, gotta pull the dash apart pretty good and find where the extra screw came from last time.

My battery was replaced some time in 2000-2001, can't remember when.. :P Where are you mounting the supply and computer case? Heat will be a REAL problem using linear regs for the 5volts, also, what size heatsink you got?? My PS is mounted in the same case as teh mobo and HD (old tower case) With very little ventilation, it is also shoved in teh spare tyre well, which gets ZERO outside air... I have only run it like this for maybe an hour constant tops, but I don't think heat should be TOO much of a problem.... But, the kewl thing is that you can't hear, or see the computr when it is running..

The case I built, you can see pics here http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4291925177

The heatsink for the regs will be the same sive as the top cover of the case with fins going doen into the case that the airflow from the fan will pass over. I have tested it with a power supply external and the mb/processor didn't even get warm so there is plenty of cooling left over. The fan is one one side and the air flows across the case which is a very short diatance.

I put my comp in the car yesterday and found it was drawing too much from the 5 volt line of max max787 based circuit, causing the hard drive to spin down. Quick fix, I just wacked in an LM7805 and connected the hard drive +5v to it which takes some load off the max787. I was having visions of having to start again with my just finished psu to increase the current rating.

I did not supply any negative voltage, so far I haven't needed it.

Yeah, also, today I bought some thicker cable.. the old stuff I was using was rated at about 8 amps, the new stuff is rated at 56amps.. lol... Now, to get an amp..... for cheap..... not going to happen.... Now I need to get a 60amp relay... hmm... anyone know where to get one?? work is being done..
