    Computer wont boot

Arggg! Always check properly before concluding that something works. I only briefly tested my PSU in the car and it seemed Ok, but I have just tried properly and it freezes during the boot process. POST runs ok, it starts to boot up and displays the WInME splash screen and then freezes. Always in exactly the same place (I have timed it). This is definately my PSU as it runs perfectly on an AT supply, but as soon as I stick it in the car the problem comes back.

My PSU is basically the 5v line from the sproggy 2.6, an LM7812 for 12v, and an LM7805 for the hard drive 5v ('cause I ran out of juice from my 5v line). WTF is going on? Is it drawing too many amps and maxing out the 5v?

(I have chopped all but the 12v and 5v lines on my AT supply when I originally started on my DCDC so I knew it would work ok with these voltages).

Buddy 7812 chips are basiclly only 1 AMPs chips try using LM1084-12 they are 5amps

Maybe your HDD just halts during boot cause it doesnt get the juice from the 12 v line

Using 2 7812 regs should solve your problem, one for the HD and one for the Mobo.. Perhaps you should use low drop out regs too???

Yeah, I figured that. I went through and checked and I have enough components to build a whole new supply with 10amp on +5v and 5amp on the +12v. Might as well go all the way now...

Just waiting for breadboard to build my new supply on, which will be much smaller and neater than the current one, since I wont be bolting on extra features later, like the shutdown controller which was a late edition I had to "accomodate" onto the board after I had finished!

Well, LM1084-12 may not run your system while the car is off, I had the problem of it not supplying enough voltage while the engine was off to spin up the HD... you may need to still keep 1 low drop out 12volt reg for the HD, and use a LM1084-12 for the mobo.. this is what I did, and it worked well...
