is there anything wrong with this? (getting 3.3v)

seams a much cheaper way of doing it than going down the switchmode route. plous i cant find anywhere to buy a max788 in the uk...and i have most of the bits for this. the only thing that really disipates any power is that tranny and ive got a fairly hefty one lying around...if not a bigger one is easily bought.

what kinda current do i need on the 3.3v line?

Check your MB manual and see how much it pulls. Mine only needs like 1.5A for a pIII and I am using a celery which is less so I just used a 5A linear regulator designed for 3.3v supplies. LM 1084-3.3 . I even have a MB that has an LM1084 on it (surface mount) for processors that need the 2.whatever voltage.

www.maxim-ic.com will send you free samples of that chip. Im not normally one to recommend you get freebies rather than paying for them, but Farnell dont stock that product code in the UK. Just fill out the form on the maxim site, and they forward to their european distribution, I got mine the next day!

This circuit is simply linear regulator. You don't have to build all this circuit,78XX series are working the same way.
